When I was in high school, I observed that some of my classmates preferred to listen to music while doing homework. They were so immersed in it that they sometimes moved their bodies in tune with the rhythm of the music, holding a pen in hand. When I asked them why they like to listen to music while studying, they said that music made them excited, which helped them finished their homework faster. Well, I cannot understand their logic because to me, listening to music is really a distraction when I am concentrating on my studying.
Maybe for those who are used to listening to music when they are studying, if they could put away their headphones and begin to write, they might discover that with less distraction, they can make more progress.
Distractions exist almost everywhere in our lives. Music is a distraction of course. Computer games can also be a kind of distraction, likewise, food and drinks, other people's conversation can be a distraction too. Even the sound of the wind and moonlight can sometimes make you unable to concentrate on. In my opinion, distractions can be divided into two categories:
The first kind of distractions is the controllable distractions. For example, computer games, music, interesting novels, delicious food, etc. These distractions are usually easy to deal with. That means you can deal with them simply by removing them, or wiping out them. Before you study, put away your laptop, turn off your mp3 player and finish drinking your Coke. Congratulations, you have successfully overcome these distractions, and this is your first step on your way to success.
However, the second kind of distractions is quite hard to cope with, the uncontrollable distractions. The singing of the birds, the footsteps, etc, are quite hard to stifle. We cannot wipe them out, so what can we do? Getting away from them is a possible answer, but we would be better trying to put up with them, if the distractions aren't too strong.
Some students are uncertain whether they are able to handle the uncontrollable distractions. In their opinions, when they are studying, there should not be any distractions. No wonder many students prefer studying in the library, which is indeed a quiet place. I do not object to going to the library to study. What I am concerned about is being accustomed to studying in a place where there are no distractions is not good to further developments, as you may easily be bothered.
Let us suppose that when you have graduated from university and found a job. The place where you work will very likely be filled with distractions which you can't remove. What should you do? Easily affected and cannot concentrate on your work? Of course there exists another solution, which is, getting accustomed to studying with some distractions. We cannot live in a place where we can be free from being disturbed. When you can't avoid soomething, the only thing you can do is to get used to it, or you may find it difficult to make progress.
So, we should try our best to avoid those controllable distractions and put up with those uncontrollable distractions. However, if other people talks too loudly and make you upset, stop enduring, and just ask them to speak softer.
