I had never been to an art museum before the trip to Singapore Art Museum. I used to view art as such a distant thing from me that I had no talent in appreciating art works. Therefore, I took the trip to Singapore Art Museum, excited but afraid of being unable to appreciate art.
Once I entered the museum gallery, the first exhibit coming into my sight was a pair of huge wing, glittering under the light like angle’s wings. I excitedly ran towards it and asked my friend to take a picture for me in front of the wing. However, when standing closer, I realized it was in fact made up of plastic slippers. Although this discovery a little bit destroyed my good feeling about it, I had to admit that it was a brilliant idea to use old slippers to create an art work. It promoted the idea of reusing things to protect our environment. I know in Singapore many people wear slippers and the worn-out slippers may be thrown away directly. This art work reminds us that we can make better use of such used things.
Art is a tool for people to express their opinions and feelings. Artists rely on art to give their voice when they are not allowed to do so in public. Besides, their feelings are expressed more strongly by means of concrete art works. Appreciating art works can nurture my sensitivity to artists’ feelings hidden in the works and give me a glimpse of culture and history. It was a worthy trip to Singapore Art Museum.
The art works indeed gave me a shock visually, for they are made in an unexpected way. But I got nothing from the exhibition, because I can hardly understand something from the works. Maybe it is not suitable for me to appreciate art works, for I know nothing about history and people's life in old times.
ReplyDeleteIt is really a brilliant idea to use old slipper to do creation. But, I do not know if you have clearly observed those slippers, because I find that all the slippers have its code and I guess those slippers may have very special background. All in all, I think the slipper wings are the most beautiful work in the museum.
ReplyDeleteI think the fact that you have never been to a museum before can reflect the fact that China does not have enough museums, especially in medium size cities and small cities. besides, i think you have a pre-opinion that art is good or holy or something.if a piece of art can seldom be understood by people, it does not mean that it is a good one, it may be that it is just a failed one.

ReplyDeleteAlways keep an open mind and try to put yourself in the mind/shoes of the creator of the piece of art while he was creating it.
