Though there are so many strange old English words in English poems, I appreciate Shelley ‘s poem “ Ode to the West Wind” very much.
I like the way Shelley expresses his strong feeling. In the end of every canto, Shelley sigh with strong emotions. For example, in the first canto, it ends up with “Wild Spirit, which art moving everywhere; Destroyer and preserver; hear, oh hear!” In this part, Shelley gives a very high praise to the west wind because of its wild and strong spirit. In my opinion, we should appreciate this part combining with Shelley’s situation. Shelley is a fighter for socialism. By the way, I do not think Chinese socialism is pure. He wants to evoke the world and alleys with the energetic and fearless youth to fight and struggle. However, heavy spiritual burden is placed on the young’s shoulders. Shelley realizes that it is necessary to free the young from the chains they revere. Hence, he admires the wild spirit of the west wind. He hopes that the wild west wind can move around the world and sing to everyone, both the destroyer and preserver, to let them be awaken.
In conclusion, I like the style, the rhyme and the emotion of “ Ode to the West Wind”. it is a good poem to read and appreciate.
