Choice of major

Many of us feel confused while facing such a question: what should I major in? This question may not be solved easily even after attending the Open House last weekend, as almost every faculty and department seems attracting. The School of Computing is great, but students in Faculty of Engineering may have more opportunities to get a better job. Well, now I tend to apply for math or physics…Almost everyone is hesitating nowadays, followed by mountains of suggestions made by our parents and seniors and huge amount of information on the Internet, which inevitably make us more puzzled. Thus, in my opinion, we should be careful when we choose our majors.

Our own interest is the most important. Though it should not be the only factor, it must be taken into account undoubtedly. It is true that we are easier to make progress in the subjects we are more interested in. As a result, more opportunities will be given to us because of our good grades, and finally we can get better jobs. However, if we choose to major in a subject we are not very interested in, we may regret shortly after entering that department. Then we may act ordinarily in academic instead of trying hard to make progress. On the other hand, many other factors should also be considered thoroughly, like personal ability and getting a job in the future. Nevertheless, interest should be the first thing we think of.

When we choose a major, information and suggestions are also significant. It is impossible for us to have a good understanding of every department we can apply to, though we have been to the Open House. Thus, getting enough information from various ways seems very important. Website about each faculty and department in NUS is a good reference, as detailed introduction can be seen there. What’s more, advice given by our seniors and parents is also needed, though their advice could be a little subjective.

As to myself, I tend to choose statistics as my major at present. The reason is simple: I have a deep interest in mathematics; as is known to all, statistics is related to math, while it is not so abstract compared to math. Actually, statistics is needed almost everywhere in our lives. What is more, my parents support me to major in it, while I have got much information on this subject. Though engineering is another choice for me, and whether I should choose a second major or minor is not decided yet, I am now forming my own idea on my choice of my life in NUS.

In conclusion, choosing a major is not an easy thing. We should consider many factors together, and spent much time thinking on it. Wish everyone get an ideal major during undergraduate studying.

  1. I agree on that interest is the most important thing in choosing your major. I used to think about choosing computer, because I thought I like it. While, after learning C programming I found that I have no interest in it. Now I realize that maybe I was just fond of the entertainment computer brought to me. I almost made a worst decision!

  2. Choosing the major is a really difficult thing, some students would like to ask parents or seniors for help. I think that ask for suggestions is quite good, because they have some experience and their information can help us understand every major better. But I think that the final decision should be made by yourself. And I think that your own interest is also a thing that should be considered. I hope that each of us can choose a major that we like!

  3. The topic is quite related to what we are concerned about right now.The article tells the important role that interest and advice play in choosing a major and your choice of major. The content is very convicing. However,I think the organisition is not so good. It will be better if you make the beginning part shorter and choose more aspects of supportment, such as interest, advice, future job,and make the aspects smaller.

  4. well, i agree that interest is the support for our passion in our career, yet, without enough information about the subject, what we know so far could just be some rumors, and it is highly possible that we found it out that we are not at all interested in this subject, so what should we do then

  6. I am very glad that you find your own goal.
But for your blog,I think you should shorter your first paragraph and make your opinion more specific since your topic is about the factorys that we should consider while choosing our major.
As Chen Zhe put," the organisition is not so good. It will be better if you make the beginning part shorter and choose more aspects of supportment, such as interest, advice, future job,and make the aspects smaller."

  7. We always consider too much when choosing a major. I firmly believe that it is not what we majoy in that make us successful, it is what characters we have that counts~

  8. Dear Tim

All the above 7 comments have their merits as perceived by their respective originators.

    My personal suggestions are:

    1. Be as well-informed as much as possible before making your decision.

    2. Ideally, you should choose a 'Major' that you are really interested in as it is this same 'interest' that will sustain you for the next 25-30 years of your working life.

    3. If you have no particular interest or you can't decide now, then, choose a 'Major' that will allow you the most flexibility when it comes to making a 'mid-life' career switch when you are about 35-40 years old.

    4. Finally, listen to your heart...

    Cheers.

    Wilson
