I was shocked at the scenes of devastation in the movie 2012, as were many people around the world. However, I was more curious about the idea that the world will come to an end on December 21st, 2012, which was said to be prophesied by the Maya. Although it was a fabricated story and many specialists pointed out that it was pseudo-scientific, I was worried that what if it was true. And the strong curiosity that I always have for unknown things drove me to explore more about the 2012 phenomenon.
Before investigating the prophesy of apocalypse depicted in the movie, I wanted to familiarize myself with the people who supposedly made it. The Mayan civilization began around 1,000 B.C. and quickly grew in size and complexity, eventually becoming the dominant culture in
The apocalypse saying is based on the Maya Long Count Calendar, which does not distinguish between historical time and mythical time. It records the elapsed days since the beginning of the “Great Cycle” in the distant past. According to the Maya creation myth in the Popol Vuh, the gods failed to create humans in the first three creations and what we are living in now is the fourth creation. According to a record on Stela C at the site of
So what of the disasters that happened around the world recently? Anthony Aveni, the
In my opinion, according to what I have learned, 2012 will not be the end of the world. And I feel amazed by the Maya’s brilliant achievements and insights into the workings of the universe, and I am fascinated by their civilization. It seems that they have many secrets hidden in those accomplishments, and there may be many other things that they can tell us someday. There is just so much still for us to discover!
during the days when the earthquake in japan just happened, i was really scared that this is the end of the world, just like the movie 2012 saying. however, these days, everything seems all right and i almost forget about the fear. well,i can't know whether mayas'assumption is true or not, but what i can do is to live to the fullest today.
ReplyDeletePerhaps we won't get the answer until that day, 21st Dec, 2012 finally comes...However, I do not believe the end of the world though the earthquakes last year and this year seem to be too much.
ReplyDeletewith so many disasters occuring recently, people are getting panic so they may just lead themselves into some puzzles. as far as i know, it seems that 2012 is not the end of the world, but the day when bees are indangered
ReplyDeleteHope that 2012 will not be the end of the world. But some events really show that the earth we live on is becoming more and more active. If the disasters (like those huge earthquakes happened these years) continue to take place everywhere of our world, and let to some nuclear things spread, human beings may not live until the end day of the world.
ReplyDeleteAppreciate your idea! I don't believe the end of earth is coming soon, but the global problems like global warming and over-sized population may result in the end of human beings. I learned more about Maya civilization, however, we also shall believe in the power of science and the wise human beings.
ReplyDeleteEverything in the future is unpredictable and I think there is no necessary for us to think about it. What we should do is just protect our earth and enjoy everyday!
ReplyDeleteIt makes no sense whether 2012 is the end of the world, if so we cannot change, is not we need not worry. i think it is better to live every day to the fullest.
ReplyDeleteLife goes on. My advice to you is to go on with your life. If you continue to think about the end of the world, it will only paralyse you and make you become inactive and living a life full of fear.
