Recently I am reading a book entitled “the soul of China”. To be honest, reading it is rather a tough task, because there are so many unfamiliar words in the book. However, I also want to share some of my feedback with you.
In the introduction, the writer says that “revolutions can become major catastrophes of history when they over turn such immense masses as the Chinese people. (xi)” What the writer says is correct; however, I do not think it is the fundamental reason why Chinese are afraid of revolution. In my opinion, Chinese is more tolerant than self-centered. We have been taught to be tolerant of others from our childhood and we get used to forgiving people who offend us. Every day, the average people in China make great efforts to be tolerant of the bad working conditions, rising food price, expensive housing and tight payment. In most cases, the majority of us try to be tolerant and avoid issues in our daily life because we have to worry about our food, our housing and everything we need to support our families and we do not want to ask for trouble. Consequently, some westerns say the crowed in China are so self-centered that they do not try to help victims to grasp thieves or provide evidences. However, they are completely wrong because they draw this conclusion in an obvious western way of thinking not a Chinese one. They do not understand what the Chinese code of ethics (li) is and what the traditional Chinese world-outlooks is. This is why the writer says “generation after generation of westerners studied Chinese affairs and…without noticing that, somehow, they had never really penetrated into the innermost recesses of the Chinese soul, had never grasped the essence of the Chinese mind (xii) ”.
To be continued
We have revolution, but at list we do not have civil warl. China is just developing, western countries cannot judge us using their standard. What is more, revolution is a common thing in a country of freedom!
ReplyDeleteas a chinese we think what western people think of us is wrong, but see it this way:we are limited by our current identity so that we can not see ourselves clearly,in this case, their opinion might be true
